I’ve heard that colleges often downplay the importance of SAT scores in order to encourage more students to apply. There are far more kids with 3.8+ GPAs than kids with SAT scores that are over 2100. The SAT is also standardized and tests intelligence to a certain extent. The SAT can be studied for, but does accurately test your innate logical thinking and math skills. GPA, on the other hand, is positively correlated with work ethic and organizational skills.
There are some seniors in my high school who had all A’s in 5+ AP classes and got around 1600-1900 on the SAT. Most of them are going to state schools and mediocre universities. There are other seniors who have also taken 5+ APs and have 3.4 GPAs. They got 2100+ on the SATs and are going to top schools like Duke, NYU, UChicago, Cornell, Northwestern, etc.
Do you think SAT scores are more important than GPA/class rank? Extracurriculars are definitely important, but I’ve noticed that top colleges don’t seem to even consider applicants who have low SAT scores.
